The Green Key award is the leading standard for excellence in the field of environmental responsibility and sustainable operation within the tourism industry. The Green Key is a non-governmental, non-profit, voluntary eco-label, recognized and supported by the World Tourism Organization and UNEP. It is presently the largest global eco-label for accommodation establishments with presence in more than 66 countries. This prestigious eco-label represents a commitment by businesses that their premises adhere to the strict criteria set by the Foundation for Environmental Education.
For hotels, a Green Key certification stands for the promise to its guests that by opting to stay with the Green Key establishment, they are helping to make a difference on an environmental level. Green Key aims to raise the awareness of leisure establishment staff and guests; increase the use of sustainable methods of operation and technology; run ecologically sound and responsible businesses, and thereby reduce resource and energy usage. The criteria for selection focus on environmental management, technical demands, and initiatives for the involvement of guests, staff and suppliers. Some of the categories covered are: Water, Waste, Energy, Involvement and Awareness of Guests, Environmental Management, Staff Involvement, Use of Chemicals, Open Spaces, and Food and Beverages. The high environmental standards expected of the Green Key establishments are maintained through rigorous documentation and frequent audits.
